Second Life

-Late night sounds of rain on our skylight. It leaks on our steps, warping the wood. I like to think it's watering the ancient spirit of the step, giving it a taste of the life it led as a tree, when it was a complete organism with leaves and roots and capillary action. For a moment, it is no longer a mutilated bone, stripped and stained and fasted by forged iron and grubby human hands. It gets to return to it's glory days. And the memory becomes such a powerful force that it shifts, it wells and reaches out to that old life from the step, and in that effort the step cracks and is rent open. The rending would have been painful for the living tree, back before, but now that pain is just a ghost, a glossy remnant that also breathes new life - for pain is essential for life. And the step that was a tree, in it's broken and crooked state, becomes whole again.
